With a chill in the air and snow in the mountains, it won't be long before the kids will be bugging mom and dad to take them snowboarding — if they haven’t been doing that already. To get a handle on learning the sport, we went to an expert — Sean Moughan, assistant supervisor of snow sports at Bear Mountain.

The office of Los Osos High School Athletic Director Tom Martinez is humming with activity. The phones are ringing, athletes fill out forms at a small table, a student aide makes copies, coaches pop their heads in the door, and a small television turned to a sports channel provides nonstop background noise. In the middle of it all, Jo Sheffield answers those ringing phones, fields questions and disburses paperwork.

It’s only one aspect of the thrill ride that is Navitat Canopy Adventures, in Wrightwood next to the Mountain High ski and snowboard resort. Another part of the exhilarating zip-line tour is an educational excursion that offers a bird’s eye view of the world.

Summer is upon us. It’s a family time, and a sparkling moment of both today and yesterday. For those of us in more mature years, it’s a time to recall Fourth of July parades, bikes with streamers rolling down the center of Main Street, high school bands followed by Shriners, Rotarians, hospital volunteers, dog walkers, roller skaters ...

Welcome to the summer! Warm days, walks in the late afternoon with family. Coffee and a bagel in the cool early morning with your newspaper. Afternoons at the park, mornings on the soccer field. Bright clothes, bump-its, beach wear, Hawaiian shirts, family day trips, beach reads and ice cream. Welcome to them all, and, as June shyly begins our summer romp, welcome to Foothills Magazine.
